This is the same with your articles.  You have to optimize on the page and off the page to get the higher Google page rankings.

• Optimize the keywords off the page – back linking

How many links per page you need really depends on the keyword.  You have to look at the competition to know how many incoming links they have, BUT!  The good news is that sometimes you don’t need more than 2-3 links and sometimes you need the 10 or more.
