The Squidoo is an article/blog type website. You can use it as a main website or as an referring reviewing site. For anyone who does not want to invest into Build a Niche Store software, this can be your alternative.
Squidoo VS. Build a Niche Store. With Squidoo, you will get more traffic probably at first, but less money, with build a niche store, you will get less traffic at first, but in a long run you will be making more profit. Also with Squidoo you will not know how much money you made and what made that sale, but I guarantee you will make money if you promote your squidoo lens.
The strategies for promotions work the same for each site. So just follow what I have outlined in build a niche store training and promotion of your website and you should be find.

Can you explain how the squidoo is connected to your website?
Squidoo is like a blog. You don’t have to use squidoo to do it, you can use wordpress blog (preference is on the self hosted). Basically if you are promoting toys, there are so many different toys you can promote, baby toys, toddler toys, creative, activity toys etc. When your niche is parents market, review of this stroller, review of this mattress, review of this toy, review of this preschool game etc…Because a parent looking for one thing, might be looking for another, and in addition, if you are honest, these parents will come back to your blog when shopping next time. If you have an opt in, you can get them to buy from you over and over again.
On your squidoo lens (or a blog) you can review each toy and have a link back to your site. There are two things that happen with this. When you are updating your blog constantly you are ranking your blog higher, (meaning google likes it) you need to link your blog to get higher page rank, and with the link back you are getting the desired traffic that is in the purchasing mode.

I have just built my first squidoo lense it is on the topic of search engine optimization. I am very new and somewhat clueless on how to build a functional lense. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sam, your link is not working, but you need to get content that people want to see and view, with a clickable link. My best advice is to go and check out the lenses that are in the top 100 and see what others are doing. That should give you a good idea!
